Does anyone like this career idea??
March 2nd, 2010 . by adminI am thinking about starting my own business, doing freelance secretarial work (typing, transcription, and proofreading), personal services- like shopping and errands, and some other professional services (like putting together presentations for people), etc. Does anyone think that this will go over well?? I really need something to bring in some extra income without stealing all of my free time from my family. Hopefully it will pan out and I can replace my crappy retail job with it. I live in MN, just outside of the twin cities, anyone local want to chime in (and maybe hook me up with a lead or two?)?
I wish I knew where to find it (NPR?), but there was a radio show/podcast a few months ago about someone who was doing the administrative part of what you’re proposing, and making a decent living off it. The key would be doing the marketing to get off the ground.
I love the idea, however I would not want the person who does my shopping to also do my editing on my presentations. I think you are a home helper OR you are a professional assistant. I don’t think we need to figure out which one will earn more. As a mortgage broker and real estate investor and a owner of an on-line business, I am constantly looking to hire people here and there to help when I can afford it. Good Luck

I am sure there is a need for it, you have to find a way to get the word out though, maybe some fliers. For the personal services you may want to go to some of the retirement homes or senior area’s I am sure they would love your services, you may want to offer a senior discount at least they will spread the word fast.

Sounds like a plan if you can get the word out about your services. Hope you have some type of really put-together resume to back up your plans when it’s time to sell your service to someone.

Right now.. i have 2 part time jobs.. and just 2 weeks ago.. I thought i would get into web design.. just out of the blue.. come to find out.. i’ve done alot of research and have read 3 books already witht he spare time i have and I’ve already started on learning how to use the programs for web design. I really would love to work from home.. and thought this was a way.. i just have to get good enough at it… which will take some time and money.. but well worth it..
dont feel discouraged if it takes time for you to get started …. your idea sounds great..
HEY… Maybe I can create a website for you in the future =)

What I would do is look for the shopping/errand gig (postcard mailing is a good idea) and then farm it out to someone else and only take a share of the profits (like 25%). Now your business is making some cash and as long as you recruit well you won’t have to babysit it all the time.
Then start a website & start marketing the assistant side.
good luck to you
