Good travel writing about USA?

March 8th, 2010 . by admin

Apart from Bill Bryson, can anyone give some titles of good travel writing books about the USA – especially about the southern states. Thanks

One I have been told is great but haven’t got round to reading yet is: ‘Ice Tea and Elvis’ which definitely focusses on the southern states. It’s by Rick or Nick or Mick (sorry! not sure) Middleton. He’s British I think. It sounds like a funny and interesting book.

I know there’s also a fairly new one (?) by Dave Gorman called ‘America Unchained’, don’t know much about it, though. I’m pretty sure Louis Theroux has brought out a book about some of his weird and wonderful discoveries in smalltown America, I guess a Google on him would bring something up.

On further investigation, I have just come up with something by V.S. Naipaul called ‘A Turn in the South’, looks well worth a try – he’s usually a pretty satisfying read.

Have fun reading – I might get some of these myself, currently obsessed with travel writing!

what is the use of travel writing? Why do writers who this kind of genre? What is it used to communicate?

March 6th, 2010 . by admin

Thinking of places to vacation? An article about possibilities can be very valuable. What’s it like there? Are there plenty of places to stay? Eat? Is it family friendly? Expensive?

You get the idea. There are a variety of different styles involved here. For example, the New York Times often writes about places that very few people could even consider visiting. ("Mongolia is one of the world’s most exotic spots…")

It’s a little tough to make this something other than an ad for the area in question’s tourism board, but when done right it’s a good resource.

I’m contemplating writing a travel book for first time visitors to Walt Disney World.?

February 28th, 2010 . by admin

I realize that there are many of these types of books already but I spend a lot of time there, love the place, go for free, and have an insiders spec. What sections and details would you like to see in a book about D world. What can you think of that i could use to make my book different than everything else sitting on the shelf.

I am a huge Disney fan too and my husband and I just went in January as our 3rd trip. What I would do is buy the books that are out there now and read them over and make notes on each one and go from there.

Alot of the books out there are the same old fluff n stuff. Nothing new and truly informative. At least not in my opinion.

Good luck with you book. Keep in touch and let me know when I can buy a copy!

Why is the genre of travel writing so popular?

February 26th, 2010 . by admin

Because most people like to read about "exotic" places rather than their own humdrum life!
