What College should I apply to if I want a major in Drama and a minor in journalism or vice versa?

March 10th, 2010 . by admin

I’m 18 and I don’t think I’m going to get into the college I originally applied for (I know its bad to only apply to one school) but I thought for sure i’d get accepted but they still haven’t sent me anything anyways. Is there a school that I could get a major in drama and a minor in journalism or a major in journalism and a minor in drama, interested in both but i’m an actor always and forever but I would love to do freelance writing for different papers or magazines, and it would be really cool to have my own column. So can you guys please help me I need to know if there is a school out there in any state that would suit my needs?

What questions should I ask a freelance journalist (as an aspiring journalist)?

March 8th, 2010 . by admin

I’m currently in school and taking a few writing classes, and will be having a class speaker today who is a freelance journalist.

She is coming to talk about her career as a freelancer, and was hoping to engage in discussion with my class.

My question is: What questions should I ask her? I want to take advantage of having her there, as I am genuinely interested in pursuing a career in journalism.

Any suggestions?

Thank you so much!

If you were starting out your career today, what would you do differently and what would you do the same?

If you can talk to her personally you might ask if she would consider being a mentor to you.

Do anyone have advice on starting a freelance writing career?

March 6th, 2010 . by admin

This question is for writers who have experience in this only. I am a writer interested in starting a career in freelance writing. I am a creative writer and I studied journalism in college–although, I have chosen to take a different path ultimately. Anyways, I love writing and I would like to get into magazine and newspaper submission writing. I’m familiar with the general, basic-approach websites like writersdigest.com, but I would like get some perspective from those who have did it about how to go about it, and what to expect.

If you want to make money online and wanted to work from home, go for freelancing jobs. They are only one, that will pay you and its free to become a freelancer. The Internet has opened up many freelance opportunities, expanding markets and helping to build it into one of the largest economic segments for many economies. You dont need to pay to get the job. Development for freelancing has been especially high for software development, website design, information technology, and business documentation. Freelance practice varies greatly. Some require clients to sign written contracts<!–while others may perform work based on verbal agreements, perhaps enforceable through the very nature of the work. Some freelancers may provide written estimates of work and request deposits from clients. Get more information on the website. You can almost find any freelance job you want.

http://freelancejobs.awardspace.com/

Payment for freelance work also varies greatly. Freelancers may charge by the day or hour, or on a per-project basis. Instead of a flat rate or fee, some consultants have adopted a value-based pricing method–>based on the perceived value of the results to the client. By custom, payment arrangements may be upfront, percentage upfront, or upon completion. For more complex projects, a contract may set a payment schedule based on milestones or outcomes.

How to start writing on a freelance basis?

March 2nd, 2010 . by admin

I”m studying journalism atm I’d love to gain more experience by doing abit of freelancing during the summer.
Do you have any tips/advice on how to get started, how to approach for work, etc?

First of all decide what you want to write about. Write about something you know. If you have any hobbies consider writing about them. There are many hobby magazines out there and you probably already read a few of them.
One thing to remember, you don’t get published if you don’t submit. Do it enough and one day they may call you for material. This happened to me last week, what an ego rush.
Secondly, get a camera and learn how to use it. Editors like articles that are illustrated and well written. If you can do both you can more that double your chances of getting published. Most magazines have writer’s guidelines that they will mail to you or are posted on line. I wouldn’t worry too much about copyrights. If you want to protect your articles cheaply, mail yourself a copy and dont open the envelope. That way if there is ever an issue you can verify the creation date through the postmark.
Hope this helps.

Wanting to Study Journalism?

February 28th, 2010 . by admin

I am interested in studying Journalism through correspondence. I am however a little confused as most offer the course as Freelance Journalism. What is the difference between just Journalism and Freelance? Is a Freelance Journalist less qualified than a Journalists? Also I realize that this career choice would most likely not make me rich, but I love to write and have decided it is time to do something I enjoy. Any advice about this career choice would be very much appreciated.

Good for you! I have a degree in journalism, and I love writing too!

Glad you realize it won’t make you rich, but it can be very rewarding nonethless.

There is not much difference between journalism and freelance, but most journalists don’t have a nationally syndicated column or assignment so they work freelance for whatever publication needs them. Freelancers are no less qualified than regular journalists.

Best of luck 2 U!

U.S. support of Israel puts America at risk and it is immoral and unjust. If Americans knew what Israel was actually doing they would not support it in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is the goal of If Americans Knew to provide full and accurate information on this critical issue, and on our power — and duty — to bring a resolution.

Alison Weir, researched the facts about Israel and found “a situation largely the reverse of what was being reported by the American media.”

What happens when an American freelance journalist learns the facts about Israel and starts to inform fellow Americans? She gets her life threatened.

After debating on “How Can Peace Be Achieved Between Israelis and Palestinians?” Thursday, October 2nd, 2003, Alison Weir and If Americans Knew received a voicemail message saying: “On Monday, 2 PM, you better not be in your office. Because me and my buddies, who were trained in the Israeli Army, will come and kill every single one of you.” The caller said, “This is not a joke. On Monday you better watch out. Don’t come to work. And close your organization or you’re going to die.”

Mainstream Media, the 9/11 Commission Report, politicians and pundits have all downplayed and/or omitted the fact that the main motive for the 9/11 attacks was outrage over U.S. support of Israel. Here is a rare exception to the suppression, it comes from The Forward:
