i have a high school education. i live in a small town. i would like to learn how to become a freelance copywriter and get work on sites like guru.com. but before i can sign up for this i need to learn how to create a portfolio, and basically everything that comes with it, including how to take my ideas and imput them into a computer so that i can send samples to clients. i dont know which classes i should take and and because i live in a small town neither do the school advisors ( when i told my advisor i wanted to be an advertising copywriter, she said "whats that?") so, to sum it up, what classess do i take? computer graphics? what else? please help me with this im 32 years old and clueless!!!
You do not need a college degree for this industry, you just need great writing skills and a personal style. You could take some college classes online from universities or community colleges to get the training you need, not a degree.
You will need to take classes in writing for mass communication, composition and grammar, marketing, advertising, economics, psychology, computer sciences ( learn to use the software you will need to write and work with illustrations).
Consider taking a day trip to your closest university town to purchase used text books. New ones can be very costly, but the used ones are reasonably priced. I have also seen these books in local thrift shops and goodwill stores. Find some, they will help you.
Most of all, learn to think outside the box. Advertising needs fresh ideas and you will be dealing with a wide variety of products and services to promote. Always consider your approach to advertising copy from the consumer’s point of view. Emphasize the benefits of the product and service. Hope this helps. I earned my Bachelor Degree in Advertising from the University of Florida. I ran an ad agency for 12 years and loved it. It is a wonderful profession and I wish you the best in your career. Go for it!

Does anyone know what freelance ad copywriters in New York City are charging these days? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
It depends on your experience. Some charge $35 and hour… others $250. Also depends how good you are and how well you market yourself… and whether the impression you make commands the price. Others charge by the component, e.g. sales letter, brochure, etc. I like charging hourly, but I will quote a per-project fee if it’s requested. All I do is figure how many hours it would take me.

I’m thinking about being a freelance copywriter (part-time at first of course.)
I’m a pretty good writer and I’ve taken lots of classes and have done lots of research but how much experience do you actually have to have before you start applying for jobs?
One more thing, I do keep a blog for the company where I am employed full time, (not as a copywriter, I do other things) does that count for anything or should I not even mention it?
Everybody has to start somewhere, so go ahead and apply. I’d suggest a cover letter or email expressing your interest and being honest about your lack of experience. Any samples of your writing you can supply would be helpful; I’d definitely mention the blog, as you can give the address for it and the person can check it out if they like.
A couple of pieces of advice about freelancing: make sure you can discipline yourself to work and meet deadlines–meeting deadlines is at least as important as the quality of your work. Keep track of everything and remember that whatever rate you are being paid should cover your taxes (including a big bite for SS taxes) and other expenses that an employer might cover (e.g., health insurance, retirement savings).
