What else do people sale? Funny opinion please?

March 10th, 2010 . by admin

Managing an investment fund: selling lucrative opportunities to investors.

Copywriting: selling the needs as well as prospects (sometimes illusions) of becoming beautiful and high-class to consumers.

Being a doctor: selling hopes to patients (sometimes even when there aren’t any).

Going on job interviews: selling yourself (which I have been doing a lot recently) to employers.

Going on dates: selling the loving, virtuous and resourceful wife image to the other, who’s also trying to get you to buy his faithful, protective and filthy rich (or potentially so) husband image.

Wearing LV, driving Lexus, living in Berverly Hills mansion: selling credibility, translated as "I’m capable of paying back whatever you loan me"

Making friends: selling or rather, exchanging promises of comfort.

What else do we sell?

I Lost My Job and Found a Calling

March 9th, 2010 . by admin

In November 2008 I lost my dream job as a copywriter in Kansas City. Months passed and I thought I had nothing, until my phone rang and a friend asked me to write a graphic novel with him. A month later Harvest Island, an action/horror comic, was finished. And my new calling as a full-blown writer began.

Direct Response Marketing?

March 8th, 2010 . by admin

I’m looking to start my own online business. I’m newbie and thinking to begin with copywriting.

Is there any proven product with step by step to learn this industry? And how long time do you think to practicing copywriting in order to retire from job? Consider me as an average person.

Best regards,

MAJDI SUMREEN

Since you don’t know what you’re doing — you’ll be fine, and do well. Just Google that term, and read through other people’s websites, maybe pick-up an industry mag like Adweek or Advertising Age (or just visit their online equivalents). All you need is clients, and learn how you can BS them before, during and post-work… like most marketing-agencies do.

Entering workplace again after 4 years…B.S. in Biology…any ideas?

March 6th, 2010 . by admin

I’m considering working again after 4 years of raising two children. I would love to find a job where I can work primarily from home. I have an extensive background in technical writing, online copywriting, biological field research and data analysis. I have also done software development testing. Of course I am a little rusty, but have the utmost confidence in my skills.

Does anyone know of any jobs where I can work flexible hours, from home, so I can stay home with my little girls. My husband provides a comfortable income, so money is not the primary issue here. I have about 10-15 hours of free time a week that I would like to spend in a constructive way rather than watching the tube.

I am not looking for MLMs, rebate processing or any other business ventures like that. Please make recommendations that use the skills I have. Thanks!

Check with your alma mater’s Career Services Office. They probably have contacts that could help you find what you are looking for. Otherwise, you could spend that time researching and writing scholarly articles or volunteer.

Help deciding a particular career?

March 4th, 2010 . by admin

Hi,
I’ve been in the job field for about five years now. My jobs have mainly been customer service-type positions. I love to write but, as I’ve discovered writing is best as a hobby. I’m trying to find a job that I could live with that is making upwards of $50k/yr. for an entry-level position. I graduated with BA in Journalism in 2001. I’ve thought about copywriting, even voice-overs as a career choice, but those two, especially the latter one don’t seem very firm. I’m at that point in my life where I’m tired of "breaking even" to make ends meet. I’d like to be able to have a job that’s making upwards of $100k before I’m 40. I’m at a loss as to what to do now. Any serious career advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :)

how to equip myself for being an advertising art director???

March 2nd, 2010 . by admin

ive always wanted to work in the advertising industry but recently i found out how much i specfically want to aim for being an advertising art director! however, i’ve researched into it, a lot of people who do these jobs all have art backgrounds or have taken graphics courses… but i haven’t! i haven’t even done art in GCSE…and therefore no creative subjects in A levels. most of those case studies i read, the people all did visual communications or copywriting/art direction …and you need to have an art background to do any of those… right now, i’m going on to do advertising and marketing communications with a language… should i change? or could i do some sort of supplement course? when would i do it, along with my degree? and does it matter i don’t have any art background? … and i dont have a portfolio either!!!
so now what?!

thank you for your help!

Hello, I thought I could be of help, since I work in Advertising.
I have a BA in Graphic Design and work in a small ad agency.

To answer your questions:
1-How to equip yourself for being an Art Director?
A degree/HND in ANY SUBJECT is acceptable, although an advertising art director would usually be expected to have some sort of art or design background/training (possibly in graphic design or visual communication ) and a portfolio of work.

Entry without a degree is possible if you have a portfolio of work.

2-Should you change your major?
The Advertising and marketing communications course is useful, however, it might not land you a job in the creative department.
I suggest you take a course in Art Direction/Copywriting to accelerate your career. It will help you build your portfolio.
If you have a BA in Math or whatever, you can still do a Masters in Art Direction. The best advertising schools are in the USA and UK.
In USA :
1-VCU adcenter
2-Miami Adschool
3-Creative Circus
4-Portfolio Center
In Uk
1-West Herts College
2-Falmouth University
3-Central Saint Martins

Or if you’re willing to stay in your current major, you can still opt for a short course or a training in advertising design.
Some universities offer short courses in advertising. The D&AD in UK, offers workshops in advertising. So yes you can do it along your degree alternatively.

So as you see, there’s not one pathway to work in advertising.
But to sum it up, a great portfolio filled with bright concepts is your key to becoming an art director.

I hope I was of help, you can email me if you want.

Career advice – advertising copywriter?

February 28th, 2010 . by admin

I want to get into advertisement copywriting. I am doing a creative writing course at the moment and am really keen to know what i need to put into a portfolio in order to become an advertising copywriter. Are there any other jobs i could start out doing which would help me onto the career ladder? And help would be appreciated!
I meant any help would be appreciated, sorry!
I knew i’d got dodgy businesses trying to get me to hand over my bank details!!! I just want genuine advice!!

hey i wanted to be one too but i don’t think i have the knack for it and it takes ages to get a job like that but maybe you’re just mroe determined to work your butt off :)
I think any written work you are proud of is worth going in there, any drafts of advertisments, even just making them up it would show you have the initative and motivation to create an advertisment.
Previous college work and so on can always help (not crappy stuff like a short story etc that doesn’t help)
good luck! and all the best xxxx
