How can a person break into travel writing?

December 31st, 2009 . by admin

Great question! If you have an english/journalism/appliable degree, it’s not that hard. Magazines need people to write about their related subject matter.

If you don’t have a relative degree, make sure to check craigslist.org(and watch out for scams!). Also, Indeed.com is a great search engine for jobs all over the U.S.

I might suggest you put your resume out there targeted to parties that may be interested!

Good luck, it’d be a great job!

Are there any free websites that offer work for Freelance Writers?

December 31st, 2009 . by admin

I’m a writer looking for a little extra work. I’ve been surfing, but only seem to find sites that want to charge a fee. I can’t justify paying $30 a month to apply for a job that only pays peanuts and w/ no guarantee that I’ll get it. I can write editorials, short stories, poetry and the such.

Yahoo or google!

In a query, how much should I say about my (lack of) experience?

December 31st, 2009 . by admin

This is my first book, and I am about to start sending out queries to agents. In the section on querying agents in Writer’s Guide, they say a paragraph should deal with your experience. I have no publications of any kind under my belt. I do have an English major from a good university. I have done some freelance proofreading/editing – should I mention that? Do I mention my paralegal certification since my book is a murder mystery? (About 15 hours of my coursework was in criminal law – whopee! But my legal work experience was not in criminal law.)

I don’t want to come across as having no qualifications, but I also don’t want to include anything that comes across as only marginally legit. Any advice would be appreciated!

Don’t mention your lack of experience. Just leave it out. You can mention your English degree if you want to, but it makes little difference to most agents. Don’t mention your career unless it is directly related to your story. Just focus on writing a great hook!

Google "Miss Snark" and read her blog. She is a literary agent and God’s gift to aspiring writers. You can’t spend much time in the publishing world without encountering the Mighty Snark, and the sooner you do, the better for your query letters. Good luck!

What does a cover letter for a freelance design job look like? Different from a regular design job letter?

December 31st, 2009 . by admin

I’m a designer but I want to do some freelance work and I don’t know if I submit a cover letter as a response to an ad for a freelance designer like I would if I were apply for a firm job or if I submit a proposal or what.

Write a good cover letter, indicating your freedom to take on freelance jobs, and attach one sample of your work.

If you need a cover letter website, try:

Free lance essay writing?

December 31st, 2009 . by admin

Are there any websites (other than gradesaver) that will pay for free lance essay or book review writing? I feel that what gradesaver offers ($25 per essay) is too little considering the work that goes into an essay.
KK,

I never claimed to be qualified for a writing position. I am only looking for some entry level work. I suppose my only qualifications would be that I am an undergraduate six months away from my degree in English.

And I think it is pretty unfair for you to judge my ability based on two minor errors made in haste on an informal website. It seems to me that you feel undervalued and insecure in a dwindling market and you feel the need to bully any potential new comers so as to assert your own "superiority."

And as far as sending you some of my work, I don’t really see the need. What would I have to gain from sending my work to you? I have more to lose; you might end up stealing my work. And why would I put myself in that position? Just so that some unemployed writer can determine my "qualifications?" No thank you, I’ll leave that job to someone who is qualified for it.
KK,

For someone who claims to be a professional writer, you sure don’t organize your thoughts well. What am I trying to justify? The fact that I have to start at the bottom? This question was about finding entry level work, so I don’t need to justify that at all. It looks more like you’re trying to justify your lack of success.

You’re so transparent. Your pompous and pretentious tone is just a facade to try and hide your insecurity for being a failure.

If you have little or no real professional experience as a writer (which I suspect you don’t considering you spelled freelance as two words and Web site as one) then you’re not going to earn more than $25. Seriously, what exactly are your qualifications?

It seems to me you’re helping people cheat by writing their essays for them. Nothing noble or worthy about that to warrant more than $25. Hell, even that is undeserved.

Without the professional skills and experience you’re not going to find many gigs where you’re paid more than $25. As a writer with seven years of experience professionally and dealing with a bad economy I’m lucky to earn $100 for work that in all reality should be more like $175-200.

I’m interested in reviewing one of your essays just to see how your writing looks and what makes you think you deserve more. What do you want to bet you don’t have the guts to send one?

EDIT:

You’re actually dumb enough to believe I’d steal someone’s work? Or worse, YOURS? Hey, you’re the one writing essays for lazy kids, not me.

I’m unemployed as far as a full-time job is concerned, yes. But that doesn’t mean I am not working somewhat regularly. I have freelance work coming in thank you. I live in Las Vegas where one is lucky to even find a job and even luckier if they find one in their field and/or pays well. I won’t work for $8 an hour, not with my experience. It’s a tough market, that’s all I’m saying.

I don’t think I am superior in any way nor I am insecure. Nice ASSumption on your part. Not surprised that that is your primary defense to justify yourself. Novices usually pull that one when challenged.

Nice try, but it doesn’t work with me.

Steal your work…pfft. Now THAT is hysterical. Ever thought of being a comedian?

If I major in philosohy and english, what kind of career possibilities are available to me?

December 31st, 2009 . by admin

Do you think maybe Advertising (like, copywriting, writing ads)?
Any other jobs/career options?

All answers are welcome, Thank you!

You can apply to law school with a philosophy degree (this is becoming very popular), or you could teach. With an English degree, teaching, advertising, and writing are all possibilities; however, if you wish to go into advertising, I suggest getting a minor in communications or something similar.
